Jump for life

With Planet Jump Rope we support several social jump rope projects under the name "Jump for life" at home and abroad.

Jump for Life works through the principle of "train the trainer". We achieve this goal through training and organizational assistance to offer, always in collaboration with local partners. In this way we want it to become, in a long-term, projects that without our help can continue to survive and grow.

Rope Skipping is a sport with great benefits:

  • Jump ropes are cheap and the sport can be practiced on the street.

  • It is both a team sport as an individual sport.

  • It is a sport that appeals to youth and promotes itself through by rope skipping demonstrations.

  • It is good for health.

  • It is relatively easy to organize competitions.

  • The sport has an extensive international network that allows young people through this sport to exchange skills and new ideas.

Rope skipping is a young and in many countries a new sport to the attention of the media. This way we can also promote new projects together with rope skipping highlight.

Jump for Life uses rope skipping as a means of social objectives such as:

  • Developing sport hubs
  • Promoting a healthy lifestyle
  • Youth Leadership
  • Creating role models for young people
  • Debatable other topics such as AIDS, drugs…
  • To offer youth an alternative to street crime
  • To support youth to move on to the (sports) universities

Recent projects:

Coaching Course in Ethiopia (4 - 7 march 2011), 50 sport teachers and coaches are trained as jump rope coach.  Planet Jump Rope provided the course materials and the course leader (Maarten Goedemé). As well two South African coaches who are trained already by PJR and two Belgian jump ropers (Ruth de Nil and Celien Aelbrecht) went together with Maarten to Ethiopia to facilitate this first jump rope coaching course. The partners for this project are Insurance Agent de Nil, Capriool Children and the Gymnastics Federation of Ethiopia.  This project is all in preparation for the new Planet Jump Rope world record attempt in septerber 2012.

Loïc Mahy (member PJR) stayed for 3 months in Peru to do rope skipping workshops in a school.  Along with three classmates he worked the circus project Quatros Los Muchachos out.

From July 2002 till July 2003 stayed Goedemé Maarten (Vice-Chairman of Planet Jump Rope) for a year in South Africa in order to develop the sport. During this year there were 1000 coaches trained.  Many of those coaches are still actively involved in the sport. 95% of rope skippers in South Africa come from the townships. After this year Maarten went one to three times a year back to South Africa to follow up and to help.  In 2006, South Africa competed for the first time successfully in the World Championships in Toronto. They won two silver and golden medal.   In 2008 they became the first African country that was the host for the World Cup Rope Skipping.   Also in the neighboring Mozambique, Maarten facilitated a coaching course at the sport university in Maputo. This year there will be a follow up course in April.

As well in Belgium we support projects, for example in two schools in Antwerp we organize weekly jump rope classes in cooperation with "Buurtsport".   During the year we also organize several  free workshops to promote double dutch fusion by the youth.
